RICK @ the RACES (15 to 19 June 2011)
15 June Capital City Speedway, Ottawa , Ont
18 June Brockville Ontario Speedway
19 June Cornwall Motor Speedway, Ont
Just two days after returning from my trip to England, I was back at the Capital City Speedway in Ottawa for their regular Wednesday night races. It was a beautiful summers day and just right for racing. The TV coverage of the Stanley Cup Final between Boston and Vancouver, didn’t keep the race fans away and a good crowd was in attendance.
During my pre race wander, I had a chat with top Legend driver Kevin Foisy and his wife Kelly.
Kevin wasn’t racing that night as he’d just dashed back to Ontario from Charlotte Motor Speedway NC. He is the current leader of the ‘Legend Masters’ in the SUMMER SHOOT OUT series down there, and will be commuting back and forth each week to take care of his business commitments. That meant, he was at the CCS as a spectator, and I would be taking a different winner photo in Victory Lane that night !
Chad Windsor took the Legend Feature, and we also got some different winners in the other divisions.
Dave Baldwin, took ( what I believe) was his first win in the Late Models .
The other winners included Mark Chartrand (Mini Stock) AJ Dickie ( 4 for Fun)
and Greg Ogilvie (Thunder Car).
As the week progressed, I started feeling below par and I could tell I was in for an unhealthy rough patch. By Saturday morning I could feel the symptoms of the Flu coming on, but I was determined to fight it. I purposely left home later for the evening races at the Brockville Ontario Speedway and had no intention of staying to the end. My plan was to get home to bed as soon as the Modified feature was over. All sorts of things can be found in my photographers bag but this was the first time I’d taken a bottle of Buckleys Cough Syrup on to the center !
I’d chosen the wrong night to be sick ! as there were double the amount of laps in every Feature race that night.
The Mini Stock feature had a great finish , with Joe McNichols fighting it out to the line with Jean Marc Larose to take the checkers.
Cole Dingwall took the Vintage race
while Stephane Lafrance charged past Pat O’Brien in the closing stages of the Modified Feature to claim yet another win.
With the Flu symptoms getting the better of me, I made my exit as planned, which meant missing the Sportsman and Street Stocks Features. Unfortunately I missed out, ‘big time’ , of seeing my friend, Bruce Makinson of Ottawa taking his first Sportsman Feature win. His wife Lynda sent me a victory shot which I will include with this report.
Once back home, it was straight to bed with a good dose of Neo Citron to help me make it through the weekend. It was my local Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night and I was determined to survive until that was over.
While I was away in England, last weeks show had been rain shortened and there were two make up Features, ( Sportsman and Semi Pro’s) to be run at the start of this week. This wasn’t good for me, considering I was hoping for an early finish !
As things turned out, the weather was perfect , the show went along smoothly without any major hitches, and it was all over before 10-00pm.
I was able to do my job of organizing the winners circle, and in between races relax in my chair behind Victory Lane.
The make up Features from last week were won by Derek Cryderman ( Semi Pro)
and Chris Herbison (Sportsman). Chris made it a double by doing it again in the regular Feature.
The regular Semi Pro Feature was won by Andrew Giroux while Ernie Cree had yet another win in the Mini Stocks .
The Pro Stock Feature provided a victory for Joey Ladouceur with the Modified event going to Carey Tarrence.
The early finish was a blessing , and I was back home soon after 10-00pm. By now the Flu had finally beaten me so for the next two days I confined myself to bed in an attempt to recover. It’s been a while since I’ve been sick, and in retrospect , I wouldn’t mind betting, that it was in the confines of the aircraft on my return from the UK ,that I picked up the germs.
