RICK @ the RACESĀ (28 to 31 March 2012)
This weeks report continues from where I left off last week . On Sunday 25 March, I was at the Cornwall Square Shopping Mall watching as the race cars from the Cornwall Motor Speedway made their entrance for the week long show. It was the start of a busy week promoting my local speedway.
I was back at work with my regular job, on Monday and Tuesday, but returned to the Mall on Wednesday ( my day off) to do a lunch time stint of representing the speedway. On show for the public to see close up, were the Modifieds of Brian McDonald
and the Sportsmans of Corey Wheeler,Jenna David and Tammy Jalbert.
All cars were a credit to the teams that had prepared them. As well as the race cars, there were two of the ‘fun class’ Lawn Tractors.
After a couple of hours , I went home for a while , before returning to the Mall at 6-30 pm for the ‘Meet & Greet’ with the drivers and media. With many fans present, ‘CHECKERS’ the new speedway mascot was introduced to the crowd and posed for pics with who ever felt inclined.
The cars remained in the Mall for a full week, but there was still more going on that week with regard to the speedway.
On Saturday evening it was the annual banquet, but before that I had a staff meeting to attend at the cities Comfort Inn. Track director Scott Hanton hosted the meeting , where he outlined the exciting year ahead that had been planned. As well as the ‘BIG’ race dates on this years schedule, the emphasis was going to be on family fun, with Hughie Primeau being designated as the Entertainment Director.
With the staff meeting over, It was time for me to tidy myself up for the evenings banquet. It was being held at a new venue this year, The South Stormont Community Hall, at Long Sault.
I lived in Long Sault for a short time, before relocating to the City of Cornwall, and the new facility, built since my move , is very impressive.
The evening went well with Gaston Salvas, a former DIRT Director as guest of honor.
Mike Bissonnette, a long time race fan from the area, collected the Mitch Jock Award
It was also the presentation night for drivers and all the various winners were there to collect their awards.
The Track Champions were Stephane Lafrance (Modifieds) Chris Herbison (Sportsman) Joey Ladouceur (Pro Stock) , Kevin Fetterley JR (Semi Pro) and Ernie Cree (Mini Stock).
A great night was had by all, and with just a few weeks to go, we are all looking forward to the fast approaching race season.
