This past weekend two more of my local tracks opened their doors for the 2012 racing season , but unfortunately I only managed to get to one of them. A late finish at work on Friday, meant me missing the Mohawk International Raceway’s opener. I didn’t get done, until 8-30 pm, so after figuring I’d miss half the show, I decided against it.
On Saturday it was the turn of the Brockville Ontario Speedway to open the season, but before heading there, I had one other place to call.
Next Sunday the Cornwall Motor Speedway has it’s opener and on Saturday afternoon the track was open for practice.
I dropped in there en route to the BOS to catch a few drivers getting in some hot-laps. I didn’t stay long and was soon on HWY 401 in the direction of Brockville.
I got there at about 4-30pm and already the pits were starting to fill. As you’d expect at the start of the season, there were plenty of new cars to see, and a lot of time was spent nattering and taking pics.
Once the racing got under way I based myself in the middle in my usual spot.
The track was in excellent condition and there was an ample amount of early evening sunshine. Two big factors for picture taking !
The program was the regular BOS format of Mods, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies, with the addition of the Vintage Mods.
Danny O’Brien got a convincing win in the Mods after fighting off a challenge from Dale Planck in the early stages.
The best race of the night was definitely the Sportsman Feature . Race long leader Corey Wheeler was passed on the finish line , by Chris Herbison ,with just a few inches separating them.
The Vintage race was won by Paul Billings, the Rookies by Joe McNichols, while Benoit Dubois too the Street Stocks Victory.
Next weekend It’s the Victoria Day Holiday here in Canada, and with all my local tracks running, it should be a good one. Cornwall Motor Speedway’s opener on May 20 is a real ‘biggy’ and not to be missed. Not only is it a Canadian Nationals event, but a 100 lap DIRTCAR Series race for 358 Mods . I’m looking forward to it !
