RICK @ the RACES ( 10/11 May 2013)
11 May Brockville Ontario Speedway.
Another one of my local tracks had its season opener, this past weekend, and miraculously escaped the bout of wet weather that came our way. On Friday (10 May) the Can Am Speedway at Lafargeville NY fell victim of rain and became an early cancellation.
Saturday morning brought more pouring rain to my home town of Cornwall, and I had my doubts if the Brockville Ontario Speedway opener would survive. My ‘plan B’ was to head down to the Fulton Speedway, which I’d heard was still good to go. After making a few phone calls to friends in the Brockville area , I found out it was still dry there and they’d had no rain.
It was still pouring down when I left Cornwall, but by the time I’d reached Prescott on Highway 401 it had stoppped.
On arrival at the track the pits were already starting to fill up, and amongst the regulars, there were few ‘strangers’ taking advantage of some ‘seat time’ before their local tracks opened up, this coming week.
As you’d expect at a season opener, there were plenty of new cars to be seen, and much of my pre race time was spent chatting to their owners.
My first port of call was to see Tabatha Murphy and her father Ralph.
Their car was as immaculate as ever with a few new sponsors added to the livery.
A new face on the dirt circuits was Jeremy Coulter, the former Capital City Speedway (Ottawa) Legend and Late Model driver. Tonight he was making his Sportsman debut with his familiar # 6.
Opening night was also the first ever running of the Glen Gould Memorial, who was a great supporter and sponsor of local dirt racing that sadly passed away last year.
There were two cars in the pits, which had been ‘wrapped’ in his honor, that of # 52 Jessica Power and Dana Aikins # 338.
Dana, of course had been a close friend of his sponsor, for many years prior to his passing.
Although it was dry, and the early evening sun appeared for a while, it was chilly night, and credit must go to the promotional team who tried to push along with the program.
The big wins went like this, Brian McDonald (Modifieds)
Aaron Pugh (Rookie Sportsman)
Guy Regimbald (Street Stocks)
