RICK @ the RACESĀ (29 May to 4 June 2013)
29 May Brockville Ontario Speedway (Kart Track)
31 May Mohawk International Raceway, Hogansburg, NY
1 June Brockville Ontario Speedway (Rained Out)
For the third week running, my report brings tales of woe, concerning the weather. After last Wednesdays rain out for the season opener at the Capital City Speedway (Ottawa) , I was looking forward to this weeks second attempt. Heavy overnight rain and possibly more in the forecast for later in the day brought an unexpected early cancellation call. This was very disappointing, but it did give me the opportunity to make other plans.
The weather had remained dry and sunny in the Brockville area, so it allowed me to make my first ever visit to a Brockville Ontario Speedway kart night.
It was good to meet up with my friends from the track, as well as seeing Brandon Revelle in action. Brandon is the nephew of www.rickattheraces.com webmaster Craig Revelle and up until this week, I hadn’t seen him race.
The new V Twin DIRT DEMONS were also there, after making their inaugural outing at the Cornwall kart track, the night before.
Thursday and Friday were both scorching hot days and things looked good for the weekly race night at the Mohawk International Raceway (NY). As typically happens, Friday was a busy day at work for me, and I never got finished until after 5-30 pm. This meant a quick dash home, before heading over the International Bridge from Cornwall .
After grabbing my usual steak sub from JRECK Subs , I was at the track at 6-15 pm, just in time to join my buddy Andy Watts on the center to capture some hot laps pics.
There was a full program that night, which included a 40 Lap Frenchies Series for the Modifieds. Winning the Modified Feature in dominating fashion was Watertown NY’s Billy Dunn, who finished the race almost half a lap in front of the second place man.
Dylan Evoy once again took the SPORTSMAN feature while P J Peters won in the Pro Stocks. Other winners were Jean Marc Larose in the Bandits and John Hargrave in the Mod Lites.
I’d made plans to be up early on Saturday morning for an event, unrelated to racing, so was very pleased the show went smoothly and was over before 11-00 pm. I was back home before midnight, and was in bed before 1-00am.
My long timeĀ friend, Lisa, has been involved in rescuing and finding good homes for stray cats for a number of years and on Saturday morning and early afternoon she was doing a fund raising event at the Raisin River Marine in Lancaster (Ont). I’d offered to help her, and her friend Tiffany transport some of their stuff and get things set up.
That’s why I was up early ! It finished at about 3-00 pm and I was needed to help take their stuff home. Any one wishing to contribute to their cause, please let me know, so I can put you in touch.
Once this was over, it was time to head to the races. My evening plans were for my usual visit to the Brockville Ontario Speedway.
It had been a hot and humid all day and that’s how it was when I arrived at the B.O.S. I was later than normal arriving and went straight out on to the center just before the hot laps began.
As each division came out to do their thing, a large black cloud was rapidly approaching. As the last batch of Modifieds completed their session, the skies opened.
My camera was quickly stashed away in its bag and I made a run for it. The rain was so heavy, that by the time I’d got across the track , I was soaked to the skin.
Soon after, the obvious rain out call was made and I was on my way home.
It rained much through the night and when I awoke on Sunday morning, the cancellation notice had already been announced on social media for the Cornwall Motor Speedway . This was the third week in a row that the track has had to call off it’s 2013 season opener.
On Tuesday night , the Cornwall Dirt Raceway Park had their second weekly show and I went along to see the Karts and Lawn Tractors in action.
