RICK @ the RACES (16/17/18 Aug 2013)
16 Aug Mohawk International Raceway (NY)
17 Aug Brockville Ontario Speedway
18 Aug Cornwall Motor Speedway (Ont)
After a month where I’ve been doing over 60 hours of work each week, things have slowed up a little , and over a five day period , I put in a mere 55 hours ! I was finished by 4-00pm on Friday and ready for my racing to commence. Things were also starting to quiet down in this respect too, with just a regular weekend ahead of me at my three local tracks. The Mohawk International Raceway at Hogansburg , New York, the Brockville Ontario Speedway and my home town track , the Cornwall Motor Speedway here in Ontario.
The early finish from work on Friday allowed me the luxury of a shower at home before I set off, then a Chinese buffet supper ‘over the bridge’ in Massena before the races.
The Pro Stocks were missing from the program this week, so with one less division, things looked good for an early night at the races too. I’m like most race fans, I love my racing, but dont want to be hanging around late at night waiting for the show to end. I wasn’t disappointed and the full program was ran in double quick time, and was over by 10-00 pm.
Big winners were Billy Dunn in the Modifieds, after getting past long time leader Mario Clair with four laps to go, while Corey Wheeler snatched the lead on the finish line, from Roy Delormier to get the Sportsman Feature. Bandit winner was Cory Castell and Mathieu Robinson won in the Mod Lites.
After getting my Victory Lane pics, I made my exit, and by 10-30 pm I was back home in Cornwall sipping a cold beer.
I had a nice relaxing day around the house on Saturday before hitting the road at 4-00 pm to head out for ‘BrockVegas’.
It was a regular show at Brockville, with the addition of the Vintage Mods. I was there in good time to wander the pits, and as usual stopped to chat with my friends Tabatha and Ralph Murphy . We were soon joined by Modified/Sprint Car driver April Wilson and Elizabeth Ferguson, the mother of Sportsman driver Jonathan, so a photo session started to evolve.
Just like the M.I.R the night before, the show was presented quickly without too many delays. One stoppage I must mention was for Chris Herbison who did a quick flip in his heat.
Chris and the car were OK and he was back out in the Feature.
Following the completion of the Sportsman Feature, I made my exit and was on my way. (I missed the last two races, the Rookies, and Rookie Sportsman) . The big winners of the night , were two of my buddies, Stephane Lafrance in the Modifieds and Sheldon Hoogwerf in the Sportsman. It was particularly good to see Sheldon with the checkers, as it’s been a while since his last big win.
The Street Stocks Feature was won by Travis Andrews and the Vintage by Jason Powers. In my absence, Corbin Miller took the Rookie race and Chris Bakker the Rookie Sportsman.
After another quick get away, and I was back home in Cornwall before mid night.
The next day, I was at the Cornwall Motor Speedway, by mid afternoon, and was soon sitting up in the tower getting some work done on my lap top, before things started getting busy.
Once the pit gates opened I had my usual stroll around, and meeting up with friends. All my buddies congregate at the pick nic tables by the food stand each week, so I know where to find them all. It was great to see my good friend Chanty, daughter of ‘Tech man Ted’ Lesgage.
She’s missed a few Cornwall races this year, while she was visiting Albany.
The pits were missing a few of the regular competitors ( the Semi Pro’s were taking a night off) but had the addition of the visiting Rev Star Speedsters. The evenings races, just like Brockville the night before, were sponsored by Jims Performance Plus, the company behind the # 88 car of Tim O’Brien.
Things looked good for another early night, and even after we had various stoppages for wrecks, the show was all over by 10-30 pm.
Big winners were Carey Terrance (Modifieds)
Chris Herbison (Sportsman) Joselyn Roy (Pro Stocks) Mike Gaucher (Mini Stocks)
while Rejean Plante took the checkers in the Speedsters.
Once again it was nice to be home from the races at a sensible hour.
