RICK @ the RACES (2/3 Nov 2013)
Well, what am I going to write about in this weeks report ?
My plans for the weekend got thwarted by Mother Nature and I ended up having my first weekend with no racing for many months.
I was to attend the end of season R.O.C Modified Finale at the Five Mile Point Speedway NY.
It was a two day show, starting with Sportsman on Friday Nov 1 and ending on Saturday Nov 2 with the Southern Tier 100 for Mods.
Although I finished work in good time on Friday, I was only planning to be there on Saturday. I followed on line, the happenings on Friday night, and heard from various fans that the weather was good. I was looking forward to heading down there the next morning .
I left my place in Cornwall, Ontario at 10.00 am in the rain , and by 1-00 pm I’d got past Watertown NY and was pulling in to the McDonalds at Adams. It was then that I noticed my cell phone had a message, and it was from www.rickattheraces.com web master Craig Revelle. It said “Five Mile rained out”. While chomping on a Big Mac, I checked out the tracks status on my lap top, and the bad news was confirmed.
With no other racing alternatives available, I had no choice but to head back to Canada.
So, it was a Saturday night at home !
I now had to rely on Face Book and the TV for my evening and weekend entertainment. Good stuff was very limited on the latter, and I wasn’t desperate enough to watch the televised NASCAR race.
Via Face Book , I was able to follow the happenings back in the UK, where the final BriSCA F1 meeting was taking place at Coventry. According to reports, it was wet and miserable and some drivers declined to race in the conditions.
Winner, in what I understand, was a very sloppy track was Paul Hines.
On a brighter side, this was the night that the tracks souvenir program had a very special picture in it.
This season was Coventry Stadiums 60th anniversary and during the year, 60 special medals were given out to randomly selected race fans. Back in May, my daughter Carla and I took my grandson Benji along to his first ever stock car race at the grand old age of 4 months ! and he was chosen as one of the special recieptitants. He was given a medal by Steve Botham and his photo was taken.
His picture along with those of the other lucky race fans was included in this Saturday’s special end of year souvenir program. They got Carla’s name wrong as well as the spelling of Benji’s second name a bit wrong, but it was a nice picture, and a great honour for my grandson to receive this very special keep sake.
A copy of the program is being shipped across the Atlantic for us.
